Lakeview Middle School's 8th-grade science students are transforming the Winona Lake Canal shoreline through an innovative environmental restoration project. By strategically planting a native plant riparian buffer, students are actively reducing soil erosion, filtering pollutants, and creating critical habitat for local wildlife.
The carefully selected native plants will establish deep root systems that stabilize the canal's banks, prevent sediment runoff, and naturally improve water quality. This hands-on learning experience demonstrates how biological systems can serve as powerful environmental management tools.
This project was made possible through the generous support of the KEYS Foundation and The Watershed Foundation, who have provided resources, expertise, and funding to help students understand real-world ecological principles. By engaging directly with watershed conservation, these young scientists are learning how individual and community actions can make a significant environmental impact.
The riparian buffer project represents an exciting collaboration between education, environmental science, and community conservation efforts.

Lakeview Middle School recently had the honor of welcoming distinguished guests from the Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce: Rob Parker (President & CEO), Lauren Twombly (Director of Marketing and Communications), and Nora Christiansen (Events Coordinator). Their visit was to recognize our dedicated educators—April Boggs (8th Grade ELA), Brandon Murphy (8th Grade Social Studies), Amanda Scroggs (District Librarian), and Lynn Studebaker (7th Grade ELA)—for their exceptional efforts in inspiring students to participate in the National Civics Bee.
The National Civics Bee, an initiative by The Civic Trust® under the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, is an annual competition designed to encourage students to engage in civics and contribute to their communities. Open to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, the Bee challenges students to showcase their understanding of the U.S. Constitution, government, and civic responsibilities. This year, twelve of our talented students will compete on Tuesday, April 15th, at 6 p.m. in the Warsaw Performing Arts Center. Everyone's invited to come and enjoy an AUDIENCE participation challenge too!
The Local Competition will be made up of three rounds, including two rounds of civics-based quiz questions. Each correct answer will receive one point, and each incorrect answer or unanswered question will receive zero points. The five highest-scoring Local Finalists from the first two rounds will participate in a third round of the Local Competition which will include questions from a panel of judges regarding the Local Finalist’s essay submission.
Adding a personal touch to the occasion, Rob Parker, a proud alumnus of this very building from its days as Warsaw High School, took a nostalgic moment to pose in front of his former locker.
Lauren Twombly also shares a special connection as a graduate of Lakeview Middle School. Nora Christiansen brings her unique perspective from her roots in Michigan.
We are immensely grateful to the Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce for their unwavering support and recognition of our educators and students.
Let's rally behind our participants as they prepare to demonstrate their civic knowledge and leadership skills in the upcoming National Civics Bee.
Your encouragement makes all the difference!
